The unprecedented explosion in data that can be made useful to enterprises – from the Internet of Things, to the social streams of global customer bases – can create tremendous value. However, with the enormous possibilities of Big Data, there can also be enormous complexity.
Oracle Big Data Appliance was introduced by Oracle addressing the complexity and bringing big data solutions to mainstream enterprises. With Oracle BDA came Big Data SQL, as Oracle's unique approach to providing unified query over data in Oracle Database, Hadoop, and select NoSQL datastores. While other SQL on Hadoop databases required all data on Hadoop, meaning potentially having to move existing DW data out of security to a Hadoop environment, Big Data SQL unified the data underneath a single SQL engine, preventing data silos by enabling access to all data via the same SQL engine and language. Big Data SQL has been out for nearly two years and as of March 17 2016, version 3.0 is released and this is an exciting milestone for Oracle.
Big Data SQL 3.0 comes with support for Cloudera CDH (both on Big Data Appliance and non-Big Data Appliance), Hortonworks HDP and Oracle Database 12c (both Exadata and non-Exadata) - Big Data SQL dramatically expands Oracle’s reach into the Big Data market. (see more on the announcement here).
Up until now, the requirements were simple, you could use Big Data SQL for "one fast, secure SQL query on all your data" as long as you were using Oracle Big Data Appliance to run Hadoop and Oracle Exadata to run Oracle Database. While those configurations continue, they are not required.
Big Data SQL 3.0 requires
- any Oracle Database 12c (EE or SE version 12.1.0.2 or higher) running Enterprise Linux and supporting Oracle Clusterware and
- any of the leading Apache Hadoop distributions from Cloudera and Hortonworks.

Of course, version 3.0 doesn't only come with the expanded support of Hadoop and Database platforms, but also brings improved performance through new features like Predicate Push-Down on top of Smart Scan and Storage Indexes.
Try using Oracle Big Data SQL – as well as other components of Oracle’s big data platform – in Oracle Big Data Lite Virtual Machine. Big Data Lite allows you to test drive Oracle’s big data capabilities from your laptop or desktop computer. Capabilities include CDH, Oracle Big Data Spatial and Graph, Oracle Big Data Discovery, Oracle Big Data Connectors, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle Golden Gate and more.
